Why did Ayto leave Brighton?

Exclusive from Your Site News' Elliot Cook:

Brighton have announced the departure of Jason Ayto, the club's sporting director, just nine months into the role. So why has the man who oversaw many parts of the football operation, including recruitment, departed the club now with a transfer window just around the corner?

Ayto was appointed in September last year and was given the title of Sporting Director in something of a revamp of senior roles.

The 41-year-old replaced technical director David Weir, who now holds that position at Strasbourg.

Brighton recruited Ayto because they felt he could provide fresh insight gained from more than a decade of service to Arsenal in different roles, including the position of scout, recruitment co-ordinator and assistant sporting director.

Your Site News understands as time went by it became apparent that Ayto's approach and way of working was slightly different to what Brighton were looking for to operate in, and get the best out of,  their specialised data-led model which drives their recruitment processes and other key areas of the  club.

Although having extensive experience and a specialist in aspects of scouting, it's understood Ayto himself also felt his skills and strengths didn't necessarily suit the Brighton model.

Both parties came to the realisation that they weren't a perfect fit and have now decided to part ways. He leaves with the club's best wishes and on good terms.

He will be eagerly sought after by clubs looking to bolster their recruitment departments in the coming weeks and months.

So, will the decision have much of an effect on the business the club are looking to do in the transfer window?

Technical director Mike Cave will step up and assume Ayto's responsibilities. Cave has been working for the club for quite some time.

In terms of recruitment - he has always concentrated on bringing players into the club and that will continue so preparation on targets will be well down the line.

Cave will report into deputy chair and chief executive Paul Barber and will oversee all sporting areas of the club, working with the existing senior team.

It's also believed Brighton may create a new assistant role to work alongside Cave in the future to offer him support in such a demanding role.

Man management and 'a bottle of magic' - How Iraola can step up at Liverpool

Andoni Iraola will face a "completely different" challenge at Liverpool - but after his "small scale" success on the south coast he is primed to bring his "magic" with him to Anfield.

That's the verdict of Your Site News reporter Mark McAdam, who has covered Iraola's rapid rise at Bournemouth first-hand.

Here, he explains Iraola's man-management techniques and how the incoming head coach can unite the Liverpool fanbase behind his team...

Celtic hold talks with Keane, due to speak to O'Neill

Latest from Your Site News' Anthony Joseph and Mark McAdam:

Celtic have held constructive talks with Robbie Keane over their managerial vacancy.

Your Site News understands further discussions are scheduled to take place this week.

Principal shareholder Dermot Desmond is due to speak with interim boss Martin ONeill in the next 24 hours to establish his appetite for remaining at the club in some capacity.

As Your Site News revealed on Monday, if ONeill wants to remain as manager, the club are open to discussing a short-term contract.

But, if ONeill does not want the job permanently, theyll enter discussions about a possible position in the football operations side, or an advisory and consultancy role.

Keane, who left Ferencvaros last month, is believed to want to bring in Stephen Glass, Scott Brown and Jonny Hayes as his backroom staff - if he were to be given the job.

Another target Celtic would still like to speak to is Wales boss Craig Bellamy

The former Celtic forward reiterated his commitment to Wales in a press conference on Monday, but the Hoops could still test his resolve in the coming days.
